Adidas: 'Double-sided' Olympic Flip-book

BACKGOUUND:
adidas was an Official Partner of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and their brand positioning was – ‘When 1.3 billion people get behind their athletes Impossible is Nothing.’
The agency in Hong Kong was briefed to create an original print campaign to extend the adidas China Olympic corporate campaign; one that would specifically reflect and support local Hong Kong athletes.
SOLUTION:
Hong Kong's greatest medal hopes were tabled tennis dua, Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching, they won silver at the Anthens Olympics. Through the adidas website we invited the public to be photographed playing table tennis shots like their heroes. All the best poses were then bound to make a flip-book and mounted against a stadium background on youth magazine, Milk. The double-sided flip-book perfectrly captured the essence of the brand idea, that athletes are made greater by the people's support.

China Win! This is the dream of all Chinese in 2008. As the Olympic Official sponsor, McDonald’s wished that every Chinese people could join to the grand event by all means. ‘i’m lovin’ it!’ is McDonald’s slogan; based on that, we came up with a new theme, that is, ‘i’m lovin’ China win!’. It was anticipated that during the Olympics, the whole nation was to cry out ‘i’m lovin’ China win!’ and cheer for China. We designed a speaker-featured Olympic Cheering station. It was equipped with a webcam, microphone, interactive screen, web link, etc. Every consumer who went into the ‘speaker’ could record their own video of cheer for China - ‘i’m lovin’ China win!’. Then via interactive screen and web link, the videos were transferred to McDonald’s website and viewed by people. The Cheering station had raised a huge amount of attention and over 9,500 pieces of cheer videos had been collected within a month.

To celebrate the start of the 2008 Olympic Games adidas presents a global print campaign called ‘Gold is not a Given’ featuring Olympic favourites Tyson Gay, Allyson Felix, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Jeremy Wariner, Yelena Isinbayeva and Haile Gebrselassie.
In February 2008, these six adidas athletes flew to Beijing – six months before the Olympic Games began.
Why?
Because as gold medal favorites they knew winning is never guaranteed. That’s why they were there in sub 0o temperatures training and familiarizing themselves with the host city. adidas and 180 Amsterdam went there to capture it. The results are iconic executions of the athletes in training.

China hopes a dramatic global TV promotion featuring tennis player Roger Federer and runner Haile Gebrselassie as mythic Greek heroes will heighten interest in the Beijing Olympics.
The global campaign, which also features Olympic hopefuls including basketball legend Yao Ming, is called Heroes and its style apes the film 300.
It was developed by the International Olympic Committee for use internationally by broadcasters who have the TV rights to air the Beijing Olympics.

French people are traditionally passionate for national athletes performances’ during the Olympic Games; however, in the past, they have never brought to the French Olympic Team the same support as towards other tri-colored teams in an international competition. The issue of this Saatchi & Saatchi Paris campaign is to create a strong link between the French audience and the Olympic French team before and during the Games. The agency chose animation and a poetic and symbolic tone, with the illustrator Joris Clerté, to elevate Olympics values over the classic image of the sport. The film will soon be launched on TV and more especially on channels broadcasting the Olympics Games (France Télévisions Group, Canal +, Eurosport,…), as on the cinema and the web.
